Equalities mediation
Equalities legislation is designed to protect people from discrimination and promote equal opportunities, not just in the workplace but across society as a whole. It applies to all employers and anyone who supplies goods, services or facilities to the public. Under the Equality Act 2010, anyone who feels they have been unfairly treated has grounds for redress, either through the courts or a tribunal (in employment cases.)
Mediation Works has many years’ experience in equalities mediation and was the sole provider of the service on referral from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). Despite the changes to the EHRC, which no longer has the power to support the service directly, our team has unique experience in this field. We continue to offer equalities mediation in cases where an individual feels they have been discriminated against on one of the following grounds:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender (including gender reassignment)
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sexuality
For more information on these specific grounds and what they cover please visit our sister site Equalities Mediation Service
Who can request mediation?
Mediation can be requested by anyone involved in a dispute, whether you are the complainant or being complained against. In the majority of cases both sides will benefit so in the first instance please contact us and we will guide you through the process.
If you are a complainant
Mediation avoids the feeling that you are an individual up against the system. It allows your dispute to be explored impartially and for you to say how you feel. Most importantly, it allows your voice to be heard and understood. You may have your own ideas for resolving the dispute, and these can be taken into account.
If you are being complained against
All providers of goods and services get complaints, but when equality issues are involved they can become complex and costly. Mediation offers a fast, simple and effective way to avoid the cost, time and stress involved in legal action. In the long term, it can help you build a business that listens to your customers and responds better to their needs.
